Nearly 40 members of the Stolen Generation participated in a Healing Camp at Wirrina Cove in mid-June. The Healing Camp was created in response to the announcement of the South Australian Reparation Scheme for Stolen Generations with a sole purpose to promote relaxation, connection and engagement in cultural activities.
The event was planned over several months by a committee of staff from Elm Place (RASA), Nunkuwarrin Yunti SA, Aboriginal legal Rights Movement (ALRM), Circle of Hope and SA Stolen Generations Alliance Committee (SASGAC).
Highlights of the weekend included a smoking ceremony performed by Uncle Moogie and sharing stories around the campfire. Everyone had opportunities to participate in self-care activities including; hairdressing; hand and body massage; Ngangkari (traditional healers); reiki and crystal healing; dental checks; ear candling; foot and leg massage; beading; and cultural activities including walks along the Tjilbruki Dreaming Track and the men’s sacred sites.
Information sessions about the Reparation Scheme were facilitated for participants to learn more about the individual and community reparations for members of the SA Stolen Generations.
