Growing pains

My son often complains of pains in his legs soon after going to bed at night.

QUESTION:

Could these be growing pains, or is that an old wives’ tale?

ANSWER:

Children commonly do complain of pains in their legs at night. Usually these are in the area of the calf. It is not known whether they are truly connected to growth.

It is important not to dismiss pains at the joints eg ankles, knees or hips as “growing pains”, but if they are in the middle of the leg and the child is otherwise well and active these pains should not be of concern.

Simple measures such as the use of heat packs or massage may provide some relief. If the problem persists, go to the doctor.
