February 13 marked the 9th Anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. The National Apology acknowledged the trauma and grief suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a result of past government policies, particularly the forced removal of children from their families.
In Adelaide, ‘Honouring the Stolen Generations’ and ‘The Walk of Awareness’ took place to honour and acknowledge the Stolen Generations.
Several hundred people gathered at Veale Gardens for ‘Honouring the Stolen Generations – A time to look and acknowledge’. The Anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations is a significant event of healing. It is organised by a number of community organisations, led by Relationships Australia SA. It featured local Aboriginal musicians, a BBQ lunch, traditional healing by Ngangkari and pampering for Survivors and their families.
“Great day, great entertainment. Good to see a mix of community and Stolen Generation Families – Excellent,” and “This day has touched my heart,” said Survivors who attended the event.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield hosted ‘The Walk of Awareness’ over Birkenhead Bridge with over a hundred people walking to honour the Stolen Generations. Elder Moogie Sumner conducted a smoking ceremony for all who walked and several members of the Stolen Generation shared some of their lived experiences. Attendees enjoyed local musicians and a BBQ lunch.
Relationships Australia SA thanks everyone who volunteered to make these significant events happen.
