It was an early start for Relationships Australia SA (RASA) staff on Saturday, 18 March. Joining the Riverland Farmers Market for a special event, ‘Growing Together’ provided an opportunity for fun, connection and learning.
Many people were curious and asked, “why are you here and what do you do?” This gave staff an opportunity to connect and offer people the chance to complete our Wellbeing Passport – a quick, low-cost, effective ‘relationship and mental health’ check-up.
“It was a great to see our staff in the crowd, talking to people, introducing themselves, encouraging people to complete our Wellbeing Passport and talking about the importance of connection,” said Brad, Regional Manager Riverland. “The Passports gave us a reason to connect, with a couple of blokes commenting that nobody had asked them those sorts of questions before.”
Sophie Thomson, Neighbour Day Ambassador and ABC TV presenter of Gardening Australia, joined us bright and early. A large crowd gathered for her talk ‘Saving the world with Gardening’ including 7-year-old Nathan (pictured). Two things Nathan learnt from Sophie’s talk are, “earthworms can be 8 years old and that means I may meet an earthworm that is older than me” and “gardening is good when you are stressed!”
Our child-friendly stall, created space for RASA staff to have informal chats with parents while their children played and engaged in activities like sandplay, colouring in, plant potting and face painting.
As an official Neighbour Day event, ‘Growing Together’ demonstrated the need for purposeful community engagement while strengthening our connection to the Riverland community.
